COMM 668H (formerly 669), The Ethnographic Return, will continue to pursue connections among community development, political action, and critical performance ethnography in partnership with St. Joseph C.M.E. on Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill.  The course is available for both service-learned and Experiential Education credit.  It will involve students in significant participation in the field, which is our primary classroom!

This semester we will focus on a broad-scale, multi-mediated project "Facing Our Neighbors"--which will include engaging with many of the friends and neighbors just beyond the walls of St. Joseph--folks at the IFC men's shelter, sharing in the bounty of the church's Food Ministry, identifying as Latino/Latina or Hmong, and generally living in the neighborhood.  All will be invited to have their portraits taken, each of which will be returned in kind and framed/mounted as part of a combined performance/life narrative/interactive sound and DESSERT event at the end of the semester.  Throughout, we will address issues of assets-based community research, engage student talents and visions, and  continue to learn from doing what must be done.
